How Live Auctions Work: A First-Time Bidder’s Guide

October 4, 2026 3 min read Auction Guides

At a live auction, an auctioneer calls the lots while attendees bid in the room. O’Sullivan Auctions conducts live, in-person auctions; this website shares event information but does not accept online bids or sell auction lots.

1. Check the current event listing

Before you travel, review the current event notice for the date, start time, venue, any preview time, and registration instructions. Details can differ by event, so use the current listing rather than an older post or a remembered schedule.

2. Understand onsite registration

O’Sullivan Auctions’ published live-auction guidance describes registration at the door as free, with valid identification and no advance registration required for the sale details currently posted. Check the event page before attending in case instructions change for a particular sale.

3. Use preview time to inspect lots

If the event includes a preview, arrive with time to look at items and ask questions before bidding. Check condition, completeness, and any details that matter to you. A photo is only a view of an item; do not assume measurements, accessories, or condition that the event listing does not state.

4. Bid only when you are ready

Listen for the lot number and the auctioneer’s pace. Make a clear signal when you want to bid, and keep track of the amount being called. If you are unsure about a lot, let it pass. A bid is a decision to participate at the amount you signal.

5. Ask about the next steps

After a successful bid, ask the auction staff at the event about the next steps. Payment, pickup, and other arrangements can be event-specific, so confirm them onsite instead of relying on assumptions from another auction.

A simple first-auction checklist

  • Read the current event listing before traveling.
  • Bring valid identification for the registration described on the listing.
  • Plan to arrive during the posted preview if you want to inspect lots.
  • Ask questions before bidding and bid only when you are ready.
  • Confirm any event-specific next steps with auction staff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about in-home appraisals with O'Sullivan Auctions.

  • Most in-home appraisals take between 45 minutes and one hour, depending on what you have. We schedule a time that works for you and never go over an hour.

  • Yes. Our in-home appraisal is completely free, with no obligation to sell. Many people call simply to understand what they have — and that's perfectly fine with us.

  • Usually, not very much. Set out anything you have questions about, and we'll walk through the rest of the home, garage, basement, or outbuildings you allow us to see.

  • Never. There is no pressure to sign a contract. We explain your options — personal estate auction, consignment sale, or simply understanding what you have — and you decide what feels right.

  • Between us, we cover tools, antiques, fire-related memorabilia, pottery, advertising signs, breweriana, coins, jewelry, vintage toys, radios, kitchenware, lamps, costume jewelry, and linens. If you're unsure, just ask.

  • No. An appraisal gives you a fair and informed assessment, but the final price at auction depends on the bidders who show up that day. That's why our auction contracts do not guarantee prices or sales.

  • Just call us at 906-675-8971 or email osullivanauctions@yahoo.com. We'll find a time that works for you.
